Transcribed For Guitar
Padre Antonio Soler (1729-1783) was a Spanish composer who composed many harpsichord sonatas that were often influenced by the traditional music of Spain. One can clearly hear in his works many influences of the guitar music so common in Spain. Even the early influences of what later came to be known as flamenco are evident in his keyboard works.
This makes many of these works perfect candidates for transcriptions for solo guitar. Not only is the original music incredibly skilled in and of itself, it can be adapted to the guitar with interesting effect.
We have transcribed and recorded 16 such transcriptions. The transcriptions were performed on an adapted classical guitar to highlight Soler's unique musical effects.
Soler was a simple and humble Padre, a Hieronymite, a monk and priest. There are very few portraits of Soler, the engraving to the left is from the cover of one of his choral works, Veni Creator, and some historians say the prostrate monk may be Soler.He began his musical career in the Benedictine monastery of Montserrat and later went on in his music career to become the "maestro de capilla" at the Escorial in Madrid where he taught, was an organist and composed almost all of the music for church services.
