Not much is known in detail about Abing's life. He was born during the
1890s (some place the year as 1893) and given the name Hua Yanjun. He was brought up as a Taoist
musician in East China, not very far from Shanghai. He apparently was adopted by the Taoist master of the
a local temple and became a Taoist apprentice. Abing learned music much of what he knew about music early on from his Taoist master.
In early
adulthood due to an eye disease, his sight declined and he eventually lost the sight in both eyes. At this time he began performing music in the streets, now using the name, Blind Abing.
It has been said that some people considered Abing to be a beggar, but it seems that he was not one to accept charity and he relied on
performing his music to support himself. And it is also said that when people asked him to
perform, even without offering any money, he still happily performed his music.
In 1950, the year of his death, six of his performances
were recorded Chinese music historians. These performances were later printed as music
notation and since that time the six solos have been performed and recorded by various musicians.
